We called into Iron Acton Garden Centre (Nr Bristol) to view their new dedicated houseplant area and took the opportunity to speak with Manager Richard Dartnell and Houseplant VM Megan Green about the project.
Q: Has the new houseplant area been a success?
“The displays have been in for just over a year now and we have certainly seen an increase in houseplant sales!” – Richard Dartnell
Q: Why did you make the decision to dedicate a large part of your retail area to houseplants?
“We made the decision after noticing an increase in houseplant sales in 2019-2020. We also noticed that our rare and specialist houseplants were gaining popularity and bringing a new younger customer base from Bristol” – Richard Dartnell
Q: How did you plan out the project?
“It was a real team effort, We wanted to make it as easy for the customer as possible! The displays also needed to accommodate the different care needs of the different types of plants.” – Richard Dartnell
Q: What do you like about our houseplant displays?
“The displays work really well for use, We now offer a wider range of plants and the stock can be seen and shopped easily, I really like the Perimeter units as they offer a tiered display solution maximising wall space, We also use the Wall units to display pots and the houseplant tables are great for displaying plants.” – Richard Dartnell
Q: Who does the visual merchandising for your houseplant area?
“We’re very fortunate that we have members of staff with a keen interest in houseplants, and one in particular Megan who is a houseplant fanatic so the new area has become her baby! She’s taken on responsibility for the houseplant area curating, sourcing and merchandising our houseplants and she does a great job” – Richard Dartnell
Q: Have you got any ‘top Tips’ for displaying houseplants?
“We have started displaying signage and care information cards with handy information offering plant care and considerations engaging and removing barriers for new customers!”
We asked Megan Green Houseplant VM at Iron Acton Q: What do you like about the houseplant display equipment stagecraft has supplied?

“It’s really simple and clean lines, we didn’t want blocky table units as we had a limited space to work with so have the shelf underneath was A) useful storage space and B) allowed light through. We added gravel to the trays to finish it off before adding the plants.”

“Predominantly used for our core range of customer favourite foliage plants. The shelving unit has been useful for allowing a larger range of plants into a smaller area. We didn’t want things to feel to crammed either, so it still feels like a shopping destination. “
